Chiefs' Travis Kelce Passes Tony Gonzalez for Most Receiving Yards by a Tight End, Including Playoffs
On a rough night for the Chiefs in Seattle, Travis Kelce still found a way into the record books. A fourth-quarter catch on Sunday Night Football moved him past Tony Gonzalez for the most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history, including playoffs (via USA Today and Sporting News).
The numbers
These are combined totals, regular season plus playoffs. Gonzalez finished his career with 15,413 receiving yards (via USA Today and Sporting News): 15,127 in the regular season and 286 in the playoffs. Kelce entered Sunday's game with 15,379: 13,301 in the regular season and 2,078 in the playoffs (via USA Today).
Chiefs on top
The mark moves from one Chiefs tight end to another, since Gonzalez also played in Kansas City (via USA Today).
Playoff miles
The postseason made the difference. Kelce's 2,078 playoff yards dwarf Gonzalez's 286, and that gap is how he got to the top of the combined list. Gonzalez still holds the regular-season mark for tight ends (via USA Today).
The night itself didn't go Kansas City's way. For the full game story, read our recap: Seahawks 20, Chiefs 3.
Our Take: The loss stings. But years from now, this is the part of the night people will remember. Kelce now stands alone at his position on the combined list, and the mark he passed belonged to another Chief.
