Seahawks 20, Chiefs 3: Smith-Njigba's 150 Yards End Kansas City's Perfect Start
The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Seattle Seahawks 20-3 at Lumen Field on Sunday Night Football, and the unbeaten start is over. Kansas City falls to five wins and one loss (2-1 on the road). Seattle improves to four wins and three losses.
How it happened: The first quarter was scoreless. Jason Myers hit a 25-yard field goal midway through the second, and Sam Darnold found Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 28-yard touchdown with 1:44 left in the half for a 10-point halftime lead. Nohl Williams picked off Darnold and returned it 65 yards late in the half, but the Chiefs came away with nothing after a missed field goal. Myers added a 35-yarder in the third before Harrison Butker got Kansas City on the board from 50 yards. A second missed field goal in the fourth kept it a two-score game, and Emanuel Wilson's 21-yard touchdown run with 3:47 left put it away.
By the numbers: Patrick Mahomes went 19-of-33 for 165 yards with no touchdowns and an interception by Ty Okada. Travis Kelce and Noah Gray each had 44 receiving yards, and Kenneth Walker III ran 14 times for 36 yards. Kansas City managed 213 total yards and 50 rushing yards, went 3-of-11 on third down and held the ball for only 24:09. Smith-Njigba caught 9 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown, Darnold threw for 257 yards, and Wilson ran 24 times for 100 yards. Seattle outgained KC 410 to 213 and converted 11 of 16 third downs.
Our Take: This one is on the offense. Without Rashee Rice, nobody stretched the field, the run game never got going, and two empty field-goal trips killed any chance of a comeback. The defense bent all night against Smith-Njigba but kept Seattle out of the end zone in the red zone (0-for-3). One loss doesn't change who this team is, but Kansas City needs a real answer at receiver before the division schedule heats up.
Injuries: No new in-game injuries were listed on ESPN's game page at the final. We'll update after Andy Reid's Monday availability.
What's next: The Chiefs visit the Denver Broncos next Sunday, Nov. 1, at 3:25 PM CT.
