Bringing Back Justin Watson Is a Smart Patch, but the Chiefs Still Need Their WR1 Back

By , ChiefsLand · · Updated

The Chiefs came out of the bye with a familiar face in the building. Andy Reid announced Monday that Justin Watson is back on the practice squad, and Tyquan Thornton heads to injured reserve after dislocating his ankle in the Week 4 win over the Raiders.

Our Take: Watson is the right short-term move, and nobody should pretend he's the answer.

Here's why it's smart. Watson knows this offense cold. He played here from 2022 through 2024, had 64 catches for 1,064 yards and seven touchdowns in 50 regular-season games for Kansas City, and helped win two Super Bowls. Reid said "he knows the offense" and that "with just a slight review, he should be fine and good to go." A practice-squad deal gives the Chiefs a reliable game-day option without giving up anything.

Here's why it's not enough. Thornton had become one of Patrick Mahomes' favorite targets before the injury, and losing him takes away the deep speed that kept safeties honest. Watson's role in KC was mostly special teams and a complementary receiver. He fills a gap. He doesn't replace that.

That puts the spotlight on the young guys: Cyrus Allen, Jalen Royals and Nikko Remigio need to earn real trust over the next month. It also puts real weight on Rashee Rice's status. Reid said Rice and Josh Simmons, who were rehabbing in the building last week, will be back Tuesday, with an update to come.

There was noise about a Tyreek Hill reunion after Thornton went down. The Chiefs went a cheaper, safer direction. That's fine for October. By November, Kansas City needs a healthy, explosive top target for Mahomes. Watson buys time until then. Kingdom, enjoy the reunion, but keep your eye on Rice.
